This will be the first year for the World Book Night in the US. It will occur on April 23rd, and I am happy to announce that I have been chosen to volunteer for this event. If you are interested in participating all you have to do is sign up to be a book giver. It’s completely free. http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/
Okay so you maybe you’re asking what is World Book Night? Well to put it simply, several publishers and authors have relinquished profits to help promote literacy. In order to help spread books around the US volunteers, ages 16 and up, have the opportunity to apply to be a Book Giver. During the application process you will be asked where and why you want to give away 20 free books. Just be sure to emphasize that you have already read the book you wish to give away, that you will give these books to low or non-readers, and that you will give the books away in a public place.
As a chosen Book Giver I plan to give away 20 copies of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian which is a controversial but wonderfully written semi-autobiographical story about overcoming racism and disabilities.
If you are interested please sign up at: http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/ There are 30 quality books to give away, but you will only get to choose 1 with 2 optional back-up books. Just don’t request Hunger Games—they are completely out of this requested book.
